§ 6-101. Examination and registration of electrical contractors.

  • (a)

    Each person, firm partnership or corporation doing electrical contracting work within the city shall file annually, by January 31, for recordation with the board a certificate showing the personnel employed by such person, firm or corporation and the respective classifications of each such employee. Each such contractor, before engaging in the business of doing electrical contracting work within the city, shall file with the board a written application for an electrical contractor's license. The applicant must set forth in said application on written forms to be furnished by the board all pertinent information with reference to the qualifications of the applicant as required by the board. The applicant shall likewise, at the same time that he files his application with the board have an occupational license and pay to the city a license fee set forth by the city. An annual renewal fee set forth by the city is due for the privilege of doing business in the city in accordance with the schedule set forth in existing laws of the city. All such fees received by the board shall likewise be remitted to the city for deposit in the general fund.

    (b)

    Each electrical contractor registering with the examining board as required by this article shall pay to the board a fee set forth by the city. Such fee shall be turned over to the city for deposit in the general fund.

    (c)

    Any person registered as an electrical contractor must renew such registration annually prior to the first day of January. The fee for renewing the registration shall be set by the city, which shall be paid to the examining board for electrical contractors and turned over to the city for deposit in the general fund.

    (d)

    The examination fee for journeyman and master electrician certificate shall be set by the city and must be renewable each year by the first day of January, and must be notified by mail. The renewable fee will be set by the city and be due annually.

    (e)

    Each person, firm or corporation desiring to engage in the business of electrical contractor in the city, who lack the necessary qualifications for the issuance of a permit or license may be issued a license upon a proper showing to the board that the applicant shall at all times while said license is in effect employ a master electrician in charge of all the work to be done by the applicant. Each person who is examined by the board and thereafter found to be properly qualified shall be classified and registered by the board as a master electrician, who is capable of assuming the responsibility of properly directing the work of journeyman electricians in the installation of electrical wiring and equipment.

    (f)

    Each such contractor or applicant must, before engaging in any electrical contracting work, deposit with the city an electrical contractor's bond in the principal sum of ten thousand dollars ($10,000.00), duly executed by the contractor or applicant as principal with two (2) or more good and solvent sureties thereon, or a surety company duly authorized to do business in the State of Louisiana, in favor of the mayor, conditioned upon the principal therein faithfully performing his obligation under any contracts entered into by said principal and complying with all of the provisions hereof. In said bond, it shall likewise be conditioned that the principal or sureties thereon shall indemnify and hold harmless the city from any claim or claims resulting from any negligence on the part of said principal, his agents or employees as result of their failure to perform the obligations of any contracts entered into by said principal or his failure to comply with the provisions hereof. This bond shall be renewed annually on the first day of January of each year thereafter as pre-requisite for the issuance or the renewal of an existing license.

    (g)

    Each person, firm or corporation desiring to engage in the business of electrical contractor in the city must carry public liability insurance of five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000.00) minimum.
